Saturday Night Live Obama Skit Overlooks Accomplishments
by Beth Kade(1)
SNL is famous for taking on past and future presidents in a parodical nature. Though many feel that their skits have underlying truth, the above skit overlooked many of Obama's accomplishments.
What they failed to realize is that despite Obama taken measures to address several of the issues, the results have not come to fruition yet. It is the government after all. Obama has worked endlessly on those areas, just no finalized plans have occurred to address the issues. It does not mean that he has not been working.
For instance, the first issue the skit attacked was Guantanamo Bay. Obama stated he would close down the security prison. He has signed the order and I fully expect that by Jan. 2010, it will all be sorted out. The government has to decide the fate of those in prison there and honestly, we do not want them set free to torture others again.
As far as ending the wars and pulling troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan, Obama has done the presidential responsible action by not putting our troops in more danger. In june, a large number of troops were pulled out of Iraq. Afghanistan does continue to get worse, but I am not sure all of the blame falls on the president. It takes more than one man to make decisions concerning our country.
Health care may be a losing battle. National debate seems to be taking up too much time. It will be a miracle if anything is passed within Obama's four years. But again, he is not the only person in charge of the health care reform. Our senate and house leaders are doing a great job of sitting on their hands when it comes to this bill. I think most Americans prefer this to happen anyway since an agreement seems impossible.
I guess what I am saying is no Obama has not accomplished everything he said he would, but he is still trying and has a few more years to do so. It doesn't mean he is not working. The skit mentioned the cash for clunkers campaign that turned out to be a tremendous success for individuals, families and the environment.
Obama continues to work to get things done, I think he has just been introduced the wonderfulness of the US government. Take heart, I am sure he is not giving up and will have accomplishments to report at the end of the four years.

it is quite naive and rosy-coloured argument, considering the bipartisan senate vote of 90-6 refusing to fund the closure and the recent non-binding house vote to prevent any Gitmo detainees from being transferred to US, that Gitmo and the remaining 223 alleged terrorists will 'be all sorted out' in three months time. and besides, Saturday Night Live is a just a show that is only relevant every four yearsRespond to this comment
