I find it shocking, and I didn't think I was that easily shocked, that the administration of a school founded by Jerry Falwell, Liberty University, said, in writing, that you can't be a Democrat and a Christian too. I'm not surprised that some fundamentalist Christians would believe this, I'm just surprised they would say it in writing. My own father often said,
"If you are a conservative Christian you have to be conservative politically as well."
No, the idea that Christians must be Republican is not a new idea to me, but I find it off putting that college educated people would put there beliefs in writing . Here is what Liberty University sent in a letter to the Democratic Party Club as it revoked the Liberty University's recognition of campus Democrats:
". . . we are unable to lend support to a club whose parent organization stands against the moral principles held by [the university.]"
The letter is actually saying,
"Well have no Liberty at Liberty U."
But as shocked as I get, I know I shouldnt. No matter what is said or done, I should just accept it and go on. After all, the Rev. Jerry Falwell has a history of saying outrageous things, so why be surprised by this latest gaff coming from his school's administration?
It was Jerry Falwell who said,
"The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country."
There is an element of the Republican Party that does want to take over this country and run it, not as a land of liberty, but as a haven of Fundamentalist Christianity. They want a Christian constitution, a Christian bill of rights, and they want the legal right to be intolerant towards anyone who thinks differently from them.
It was Rev. Falwell who said,
" I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won't have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be! "
The problem with ultra conservative, right wing fundamentalism is that it turns into a circular firing squad where the narrow minded get into a battle to see who has the narrowest of minds and one by one they eliminate their brothers and sisters in Christ.
For example, Billy Graham has been called the Pastor of American, but Jerry Falwell said of Reverend Graham,
"Billy Graham is the chief servant of Satan in America ."
One wonders why Falwell decided to call his school Liberty .
