Dick Cheney Declares Torture is Ok, as Long as Its Effective Torture
by Vince Robertson(56)I could hardly believe my ears as I listened to an interview with former Vice President Dick Cheney on Fox News Monday, as what I heard sounded more like a scene from the popular TV series ‘24’ than real life. Dick Cheney, feeling like the finger of scrutiny has been pointed at him was on the defensive. Last week, the Obama administration released memos showing that Cheney and the former Bush Administration had approved of techniques which had earlier been condemned by the U.S. and other World leaders as torture.
Cheney said that releasing the memos was a mistake, because the documents did not include other evidence that demonstrated that this torture was, at times, successful.
Is this really what we have come to? We can justify our misdeeds by saying that they were effective? The saying comes to mind that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Here we have a former top U.S. official declaring that techniques outlawed as torture are acceptable, because they are effective. Do you know what else can be justified by using this logic? There is no end to that list.
I want our country to be as safe as much as anyone, but if we tell our enemies we don’t have to follow International law, how could we expect them to follow International law?
This country’s Founding Fathers must be spinning in their graves.

Rachel Maddow had a great response to this. It seems that the memos and legal research for justifying and rationalizing the torture aspect away, took place BEFORE we had any prisoners. The search for justifying torture started first. They did not try to get information using accepted American standards of interrogation, and then, when those methods failed they sought to increase their efforts to get the information. NO, they wanted to torture all along. Even if more human methods might have worked, they WANTED to torture. Thanks for your insight.Respond to this comment
